Ellie G

Ellie is a reference and instruction librarian at Delaware County Community College. She has been with MLS since August 2019.

Inspirational guru or someone you admire: I am always inspired and amazed by the students I work with, especially the ones who are returning to school after years away. It takes courage to start college after having been out of school for many years. Many are new to this country, new to college learning and expectations, new to computers and online learning. They have many demands on their time and attention, yet they make time to expand their awareness and to improve their prospects for themselves and their families.

Music Fave: Currently it’s musicals from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Lately I listen to “The Man That Got Away” from A Star is Born whenever I’m alone in the car.

Why singing? I loved singing and belonged to various choruses as a kid. I’m always singing old show tunes to myself and my daughters, so I decided to stop torturing my family and put my humming to use. I enjoy working hard as a group and having pretty music as the fruits of our labor.

Why MLS? I originally found Main Line Singers for my mom, who also loves singing. I couldn’t convince her how much fun it would be, but I did manage to convince myself. I love the mix of old standards, show tunes and pop songs. I also appreciate that I can participate even though I’m not a seasoned musician and I can’t commit much time.

Hobby, passion, avocation: Cooking and baking. I love cookbooks, reading recipes, putting my spin on them and making things that make people happy. It helps that one of my daughters always tells me what a good cook I am while the other one sobs over the misfortune on her dinner plate.

Best life principle to live by: Treat others as you want to be treated.

Jack C

Jack did home inspections and flipped houses before retiring in 2000. He is a one-year member of Main Ling Singers.

Inspirational guru or someone you admire: I would like to spend an evening with Charles Barkley. He’s very outspoken, has an opinion on a great variety of subjects and a great perspective on life. A gentle giant.

Music Fave: I love any type of music except opera. My favorite musical group is Crosby Stills Nash and Young because of their great harmonies and lyrics.

Why Singing? I sing anywhere, anytime and for any reason whenever I can. It’s been a family tradition to be a singer, not necessarily a good one. Maybe it’s more of a genetic issue. I have a whole lot of fun singing with my brother and my two sons. I also sang regularly with my grandfather and my father, a barbershop singer. Singing is a whole lot cheaper than psychiatry.

Why MLS? I joined MLS because of their well-organized approach to everything. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. And the repertoire is really user-friendly.

Hobbies, passions: Tennis, woodworking and gardening.

Best life principle to live by: If you can’t make both ends meet, make one vegetable!

Kathleen K

Kathleen is a freelance project manager who has worked for nonprofit organizations that serve youth. She is a one-year member of MLS and is joined in the group by her significant other, Benn.

Inspirational guru or someone you admire: Yo-Yo Ma. His musical talent and versatility are unquestionable, but his humanity and the way he engages with the world are amazing to me. He also doesn’t take himself too seriously, which I love.

Music fave: Right now it’s Hozier. Everything he does is kind of eerie magic.

Why singing? It’s something I’ve just always enjoyed on my own. Before joining this group, the most public singing I’d done was karaoke.

Why MLS? Main Line Singers seemed to be a welcoming and relaxed place to try out choral singing. There are a lot of lovely people here and I’m glad I joined. I look forward to coming to rehearsals every week.

Hobby, passion, avocation: I would travel all the time if I could. I like getting outdoors for some camping, hiking or climbing, and I play cello.

Best life principle to life by: Get outside of your comfort zone often, learn something from everyone you meet and be present and engage with what’s around you.

Benn B

Benn is a solutions architect for Force 3, Inc. He is a two-year member of Main Line Singers and is joined in the group by his significant other, Kathleen.

Inspirational guru or someone you admire: Elon Musk is one of the most interesting people around right now. Born in South Africa, educated at U Penn and Stanford, he founded PayPal, Tesla Motors, and SpaceX. Anybody who goes from self-made tech billionaire to inventing electric supercars and actual rocket ships has to be pretty cool in my book.

Musical fave: I really don't have an absolute favorite, but lately I've been listening to a lot of Frank Turner and Radiohead. I must be trying to relive my college days!

Why singing? Because of the social aspect. Sure, you have your own part to learn but it's fun to be working with a group towards a common goal. Plus, it's much cheaper than taking up the tuba or something.

Why MLS? I like the fact that MLS takes everyone. They don't care if you can read music, have had any training, or even if you consider yourself a "good singer" or not. Everyone is welcome and everybody has fun together.

Hobby, passion, avocation: I tend to have a lot of little projects going on all the time. If I have one overall "passion" it's puttering around. I like to tinker with things, take stuff apart and occasionally put it back together.

Best life principal to live by: There are a couple lines from Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater that I've always really liked [in which the main character addresses twins at a baptism]. "Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. “God d***it, you've got to be kind.”

Alice K

Alice Kirsch is recently retired from the health care field and is a two-year member of Main Line Singers.

Personal Inspiration: I admire creative people in all fields of life, those who have vision beyond any of my “boundaries.” I am concrete so I love those who aren’t.

Music Faves: Rock, folk, pop

Why singing? It makes me feel joyful and connected to the world.

Why MLS? Because it includes men and women, the music selection is awesome and all are welcome to sing.

Hobby, passion, avocation: Grandchildren, local art and music, parks, arboretums and gardens. Also, birds, yoga, local farms for shopping, craft fairs and artisans, museum visits.

Best life principle to live by: Pay it forward with kindness.
