In 1939, Judy Garland melted hearts with this classic song in The Wizard of Oz. More than 50 years later, Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole melted them all over again with his unique ukulele version.

Which proves that whether you’re in Kansas or Kauai, a rainbow is made for dreaming.

We won’t bring Toto but we will bring the ukes when we sing Over the Rainbow at our upcoming concert at 1:30 p.m. Sat., Feb. 4, at St. Katharine of Siena Church in Wayne.

Fun Facts:

Over the Rainbow was written by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg.

Arlen wrote the music for the song while he and his wife were driving down Sunset Boulevard on their way to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

Israel K. called the recording studio at 3 a.m. to record his version, and he did it in one take.

Imagine it. You’re trudging through a pile of slush in your boots and overcoat, wondering when the grey sky will clear. Then suddenly the sun breaks through and, voila!, the world is looking pretty good again.

Now, imagine you could wrap that sunshine up and send it to someone special to brighten their day. And there you have it, John Denver’s 1973 contemporary folk hit that played all over the radio for weeks on end.

We’ll do it up right with a guitar accompaniment at our next concert performance, Sun, Moon & Stars, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Katharine of Siena Church in Wayne. See you there!

Fun Facts:

Sunshine on My Shoulders went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Denver wrote the song in Minnesota in late winter while in a melancholy frame of mind.

It became the theme song of the 1973 movie Sunshine.

Denver, an activist and humanitarian, died at 53 when the light plane he was piloting crashed in Monterey Bay in California.

You don’t need a rocket ship to fly to the moon. All you have to do is fall in love, and in no time you’ll be orbiting that big rock in the sky, light as a feather!

Not to mention it’s cheaper and you don’t need a space suit.

We’ll help you lift off at our next concert performance, Sun, Moon & Stars, at 1:30 p.m. Sat., Feb. 4, at St. Katharine of Siena Church in Wayne.

Who needs gravity anyway?

Fun Facts

This jazzy old standard by Bart Howard was first released in 1954 with Kaye Ballard on vocals.

It has been covered by a host of singers, including Johnny Mathis, Eydie Gorme, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson and, of course, old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted it as a “Towering Song” in 1999.

The music publisher tried to get Howard to change “fly me to the moon” to “take me to the moon,” but Howard refused.

Good for him.

The Mighty Mississippi. It really is wider than a mile, much wider in some places as it winds its lazy way south from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Its most famous travelers were a boy named Huck and an enslaved man named Jim, who journeyed down the river on a raft, looking for some kind of freedom.

We can’t promise the raft when we perform this beautiful classic in our upcoming February concert, Sun, Moon & Stars. But thanks to Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, we can promise the journey. It’s sure to conjure the romance and adventure of our most storied river.

Fun Facts:

Moon River was composed by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. It was performed by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961 and won an Academy Award for best original song.

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in 1884 in the UK and 1885 in the U.S. Other writers who have written about the Mississippi River include Herman Melville, Edna Ferber and George R.R. Martin.

The name Mississippi comes from the Ojibwe Misi-ziibi, or Great River.

The river is considered the most endangered river in the U.S. due to pollution and climate change.

This classic love song seems to float on air. So light, so smooth, so starry. A little lullaby that makes you want to tuck yourself in and dream.

And what better dream is there than a dream of the one you love? It’s the perfect way to end the day. Okay, sitting in a bistro by the Seine with a glass of wine is pretty good, too. But you get the idea…sweet dreams.

We’ll be singing Dream a Little Dream of Me in our next concert performance, Sun, Moon & Stars, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Katharine of Siena Church in Wayne. Come out and join us. We’ll have you dreaming in no time.

Fun Facts:

This song was first recorded in 1931 by Ozzie Nelson of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet fame. It was later covered dozens of times, including versions recorded by Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Doris Day and French singer Enzo Enzo.

The most popular version was recorded by The Mamas and Papas in the 1960s, with Cass Elliot singing the solo.

Cass did her own whistling on the song.

How could anything be brighter than the sun?

Come hear us sing this Colbie Caillat hit in our next concert (titled Sun, Moon and Stars) and you’ll find out. You might even need your sunglasses because this upbeat number makes us want to turn on a million-watt shine.

It’s all about unexpected love and lightning strikes and stars falling from the sky. It’s kind of dazzling, if we do say so ourselves.

Brighter Than the Sun will be part of our upcoming Sun, Moon & Stars concert scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Katharine of Siena Church in Wayne.

Fun Facts:

Brighter than the Sun was released in 2011 on the album All of You

Caillat co-wrote the song with Ryan Tedder, lead vocalist for OneRepublic

The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100

Tambourines and handclaps add to the song’s lively, sunny mood
